Minnesota Department of Public SafetyThe Minnesota bureau of Criminal Apprehension(BCA)announced that a new automated fingerprint identification system(AFIS)will enhance the ability of law enforcement to match people to criminal activity based on fingerprints. This new system will provide more rapid matching of fingerprints submitted to the system and has greater storage capacity than the previous database. Agencies can submit fingerprints and receive a match within a few minutes, a process which previously could have taken several hours. The technology in the new AFIS makes it possible to match more fingerprints of lower quality; such as those captured at crime scenes, enhancing the capabilities for investigating crimes. |
